Message from the 2024/25 NCIA Board Chair
For more than four decades, NCIA has provided a regional approach to environmental stewardship and safety, while also representing our member companies through a steadfast commitment to stakeholder relationships at all levels. With so many industry-leading companies calling the region home, I’m pleased to be stepping into the role of Board Chair for 2024-25.
Recognizing the value for Albertans is far more significant when issues are explored from a variety of vantage points, we will continue to focus our time and efforts on connecting with local agencies, cultivating beneficial partnerships, collaborating on effective policy, and advancing shared agendas and opportunities.
NCIA spends over 12,000 person hours/year working with government (municipal, provincial and federal) on policy matters related to the Edmonton Metropolitan Region (which includes Alberta’s Industrial Heartland). We will continue to be actively involved, both as an association and as individual member companies, in the following areas:
Regional Effects Management: Air, water and land
Ambient Air Quality (with Fort Air Partnership)
Groundwater Management
Industrial Noice Management
Designated Industrial Zone (DIZ) for Alberta’s Industrial Heartland
I appreciate the hard work of NCIA’s Board of Directors, various committee members and our community partners—all of whom significantly contribute to our achievements. Through our shared commitment and collective efforts, we continually demonstrate how NCIA is ensuring sustainable development, environmental stewardship and the ongoing health, safety and prosperity of our community.
I look forward to continuing to work with our 22 member companies, government and community members as we reach additional milestones and achieve even greater success.
Sincerely, Greg Poholka Sherritt International NCIA Board Chair (2024/25)
Having recently stepped into the role of Executive Director in May 2024, I am excited and honoured to represent the member companies of this association with our stakeholders. They are a strong and respected team of business leaders and professionals who represent the core of industry in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland.
NCIA has been part of Alberta’s Industrial Heartland for over 40 years and with one enduring mission: to be the respected voice of industry in the region. We have a deep pool of expertise, specialties, opinions and diverse voices at our disposal. Through our strong and collaborative ties with associations, government organizations and community groups at provincial, regional and local levels, we continue to cultivate beneficial partnerships, collaborate on effective policy, and advance shared agendas and opportunities.
By promoting and supporting sustainable industrial growth and high quality of life through environmental, socio-economic, and public safety programs, NCIA plays a key role in helping to build accountability and set high stewardship standards for companies operating in the region. This is demonstrated through some of our priority projects, including:
The Regional Noise Management Model, a regulatory tool for managing industrial noise on a large scale and the first of its kind in the world.
Air quality monitoring and reporting for residents through Heartland Air Monitoring Partnership.
A collaborative approach to mutual aid and emergency notifications through NR CAER.
Joint efforts with the Government of Alberta on a regional groundwater management project to protect the Beverly Channel Aquifer for future generations.
A Water Management Framework to protect the Devon to Pakan reach of the North Saskatchewan River from municipal and industrial effluent discharges.
The establishment of Alberta’s Industrial Heartland as a Designated Industrial Zone. NCIA continues to focus on being the recognized and respected industry association promoting sustainable development
